Close to home

Clifden Glen is an ideal base from which to tour all of Connemara. The wonderful beach and golf course at Ballyconneely are only nine kilometres south from Clifden and just fourteen kilometres further and you are in Roundstone. Head north for twelve kilometres to Claddaghduff and with the tide out walk across the golden sands to beautiful Omey Island and picnic. A day’s visit to Inishbofin, taking the ferry from Cleggan which is just twelve kilometres from Clifden, is another treat not to be missed.

The town of Clifden itself is also a wonderful place for sophisticated retail therapy. The best of Irish designers can be found at The Design Platform. Many antique and interior design shops and art galleries offer an afternoon of fun. Griffin’s Pub renowned for its sports atmosphere is the place to watch rugby or football. If you want to watch the world go by sit in E J King’s window tables and enjoy life at Market Square. The thriving city of Galway and Westport are only an hour away by car.

For sightseeing Connemara is incomparable from the towering cliffs of the Aran Islands with its great Celtic forts at Dun Aongus to the last great bog terrain at Roundstone, the Connemara National Park with its herds of Connemara ponies and red deer, the magnificent Kylemore Abbey and Ireland’s only fjord at Killary.
